Frequently asked questions
Does marrying a Thai grant nationality automatically?
No; marriage only opens a route with softer conditions, and the applicant still shows income and residence and passes the committee process step by step.
Is dual nationality possible?
Thai law contains no absolute prohibition and dual nationals are common in practice, but a naturalising applicant should check the home country's rules, since some treat acquiring a new nationality as losing the old one.
Does permanent residence allow buying land?
Generally not, because the land ownership restriction attaches to nationality rather than residence status, though residence does help with condominium purchases and bank lending.
Must the applicant stay in Thailand while it is pending?
Travel is allowed provided the visa and work permit stay continuously valid; a lapse while the file is pending can end it immediately.
How does a child born abroad to a Thai mother claim nationality?
Through nationality by descent: a Thai birth certificate is issued via the embassy or consulate, after which the child is added to a Thai house registration and applies for an ID card.
Does a minor criminal record end the application?
Not necessarily; it turns on the nature of the offence, how long ago it was, and the judgment, and a file that addresses it openly with the case papers fares better than one that hides it.
