Civil Status and Registration Work, from Legitimation to Correcting Faulty Records in Thailand
One misspelt letter on an official record can stall a land sale, an inheritance claim and a visa application at the same time.
Quick answer
Civil status work makes official records match reality and stand up both in Thailand and abroad. It covers legitimation of a child, adding a person to a house registration, correcting a date of birth or a name entered wrongly, changes of forename and surname, marriage and divorce registration involving a foreign spouse, recording a family status arising from a marriage celebrated overseas, and obtaining status certificates for foreign authorities. Many items are handled at the district registrar, but some require a court order first. From THB 12,000.

Documents to prepare

- The relevant birth certificate, marriage or divorce registration
- Older documents showing the earlier spelling to explain the discrepancy
- The foreign spouse's passport and home-country status documents
- DNA results or witnesses where parentage must be proved
How it works
5-step process
- 1
Map the whole document set before fixing one entry
Amending only the house registration while the birth certificate stays as it was simply creates a new mismatch, so we sequence the corrections to land together.
- 2
Confirm whether the registrar has the power
Some amendments, such as a date of birth or an entry that alters personal status, always need a court order behind them.
- 3
Line up witnesses with first-hand knowledge
Registrars and judges alike weigh a witness who can recount the events over a relative simply repeating what they were told.
- 4
Run the foreign side in parallel
Foreign papers need authentication and translation before Thai use, and starting that at the same time cuts weeks off the total.
- 5
Keep a certified set for later
The same records get requested again at visa, lending and inheritance stages, so a spare certified set saves time indefinitely.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How does legitimation differ from adoption?
Legitimation applies to a biological child born outside marriage, while adoption creates a legal bond with a child who is not biologically yours; both confer inheritance rights but the procedures and paperwork differ substantially.
Does the child have to consent to legitimation?
Consent from both the child and the mother is required, and where either cannot or will not give it, the father must ask the court for a judgment in its place.
We married abroad — must we marry again in Thailand?
No second ceremony is needed, but recording the family status at the district office makes the marriage visible to Thai records, which matters for land dealings, tax filings and any later estate work.
Can a year of birth be corrected?
It can be, but almost always through the court, because the entry affects conscription, pension and limitation periods, so solid proof that the original entry was wrong is essential.
Can a foreigner obtain a Thai single-status certificate?
Thai registrars certify only what appears in Thai records, so a foreigner obtains the declaration from their own embassy first, then has it translated and authenticated for Thai use.
How is a surname changed after divorce?
The divorce registration supports an application to revert to the former surname, after which the ID card, passport, bank accounts and land titles all need updating to match.
